Restoring The Fixer-Upper Home You Purchased To Its Original Beauty

If you recently purchased an older home that could be deemed something of a fixer-upper, you may not know what you can and should do to begin the restoration and renovation process. While the idea of tackling such a project can feel overwhelming at times, you do not want to let yourself get discouraged from the project you have taken on. Get to know some of the steps that you can take to begin the restoration and renovation process so that you can have your older home in top shape before you know it.  

Masonry Restoration

Many older homes, especially the nice ones, were built with masonry exteriors. If this is the case with your home, you will want to begin the historical masonry restoration on your home as soon as possible. Masonry work is a very involved process, especially when you are trying to preserve the original beauty and style of your home.

Historical masonry restoration is especially important if you want your home to receive historical landmark status as well. In order for your restoration to be truly historical, you will need to work with a masonry expert to research the original materials used to build your home, any restorations that have already been made, and the like. The research itself can be a long and involved process before you and your restoration contractors (such as those from Otto Restoration Inc.) can even get to work. As such, it is best to get the process started as quickly as possible.

Start With Plumbing And Electrical Systems

Before you start painting and wallpapering or even working to restore the floors and other aspects of your older home, you want to start with some of the elements that may not always be as visible. These include your plumbing and electrical systems.

Both of these aspects of your home are extremely important and because your home is older, likely need to be updated. Many older electrical outlets are not grounded. This not only means that most of them are two-prong instead of three-prong, but they may be more prone to causing electrical fires because they do not have the piece to ground the wires and protect against that. Similarly, some wiring may be frayed and simply need to be replaced.

Older plumbing systems and pipes can also present challenges. The pipes may have deteriorated, contaminating the water that flows through them or causing leaks. And if your home still has pipes from when it was originally built, they may be lead pipes which present their own sets of health and safety hazards (and will likely need to be replaced). Getting these types of renovations and restorations out of the way early will allow you to take on more aesthetic tasks without having to later re-cut into walls and have to redo your work.

Now that you know a few of the early steps to take when you are restoring your older home, you can get started as soon as possible and restore your home to its former glory.
